How to Create a Smart Group in EndNote X2

February 28, 2009 – Yingting

The “Smart groups” feature is new in EndNote X2. It is located in the Groups panel at the left of the screen. Smart groups are created to build subsets of references automatically based on the search strategies you set up previously. They are dynamically updated as references are added, deleted or edited in the library.

To Create a Smart Group:

Open the library in which you would like to build an automatic search for a subset of the references in that library. There are three ways to create a smart group.

·        Method 1:

Go to Groups at the menu bar on the top of the screen and choose Create Smart Group. A search box will appear. In the Search Box, type in your search terms and then click on the Create button. Your smart group is built. You may rename it to your choice.

·        Method 2:

Do a right-click on the Smart Groups header in the Groups Panel. A search box will appear. In the Search Box, type in your search terms and then click on the Create button. Your smart group is built. You may rename it to your choice.

·        Method 3:

Use the Search function by either clicking on the Search tab at the bottom of the screen or choosing “Search Library” under the Tools menu on the top of the screen. In the Search Box, type in your search terms and click on the Options button. Then select Convert to Smart Group. A Converted Search group is created under Smart Groups. Rename the smart group to your choice.

Once a smart group is created, you may either right-click on the group name to edit, rename, or delete the group or highlight the group name and go to the Groups menu for these functions.
