How to import references from a traveling library in a Word document to an EndNote library?

Question: If someone sends me a Word document that they created using Endnote, can I import the references they used in the document without them sending me their library?

Answer: Yes, you can use EndNote’s “Export Traveling Library’ feature to import the references from the Word document under the condition that the field codes have not been removed from that document. To copy the references into your EndNote Library, you need to:

Have the Word document open and go to the EndNote tab (in Word 2007 +).
In the most right column, click on “Export to EndNote”.
Choose “Export Traveling Library”. Follow the directions, you will be guided to add those references into either an existing EndNote library (by selecting a library from the drop-down list or using Browse to locate the library) or a new EndNote library.

Note: It is recommended that you send references to a new EndNote library, so you can review the records before adding them to an existing library. Also you need to be aware that the traveling library does not include Notes, Abstracts, or Figures.

How to Reinstall EndNote CWYW Tools in Word?

Question: I meant to disable EndNote CWYW in a document, but instead I removed the EndNote CWYW add-in tools from my computer accidentally. How can I reinstall the add-in tools?

Answer: You have two ways to get the tools back. The easier way is run the “Repair” function by following the steps below:

Go to My Computer -> C drive -> Program Files.
Click on “Add or remove programs”.
Click on EndNote X5 or other versions of EndNote.
Click on “Change”. Then the “EndNote X5 Setup” window pops up.
Clicking in the radio button next to “Repair”, you’ll make your computer automatically reinstall the missing or corrupt files. Follow the directions to complete the repair process. Click “Finish” when it is completed.
Close all MS Office applications and restart Word. The EndNote Tab should reappear.

Another way is just to uninstall EndNote and then reinstall the whole program. The missing add-in tools will be installed along with the whole program. This method is more tedious and not recommended.

How Can I Disable EndNote in a Document in Word 2007?

Question: I would like to manually edit the document. But each time I edit it, the document returns to its former form. How can I disable Endnote in a document?

Answer: To disable EndNote X5 (or rather CWYW) in your document in Word 2007, please follow the steps below:

In Word, click on the EndNote X5 tab.
In the Tools box, click on “Preferences” located right below “Export to EndNote”. The “EndNote X5 Cite While You Write Preferences” window pops up.
In the pop-up window, click on the 2nd tab named “Keyboard”.
Scroll down until you see “Remove Field Codes”.
Click on the Remove button to remove the field codes.

Thus your document is no longer associatied with EndNote. You can manually edit your document. Many publishers require the authors to remove the field codes when they submit the manuscripts.

APA 6th Ed. Style – Journal Article Citing Error

In EndNote X5 an error has been discovered in the APA 6^th edition publication style. The error may cause some journal articles to be cited incorrectly in a bibliography. The problem is the template used to cite journal articles includes the “Type of Article” field. If there is an entry in the “Type of Article” field in a reference’s EndNote record the information in that field will be included in the citation to the journal article in the bibliography. This is NOT the correct APA format for a journal article citation.

To correct this problem download and install a revised copy of the APA 6^th publication style available on the University Libraries EndNote web page, or edit the APA 6^th Publication style from within EndNote. Instructions on how to do both are available in the EndNote web page’s News and Help section.

I can’t find the style I want to use in the EndNote desktop program, what should I do?

Here are the options for you:

Go to http://www.endnote.com and then click on “support & services” menu; on the left column, choose “Output Styles”. At the next page, search for the style you need. If found, download and save it in your computer at C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Styles (where X4 can be replaced by other versions). You may also request to download all the styles that are available for EndNote. Note: including all the styles in your EndNote program will slow down the speed of launching and its performance.
Use the EndNote user forum which can be accessed from the bottom of the left column at http://endnote.com/. Then choose “EndNote Styles, Filters, and Connections” to search for any related posts or ask for help from other users.
To create the style on your own by saving a copy of style similar to your desired one. Then make changes according to your style’s format.
Call the EndNote Technical Support for help. It takes two weeks or so for them to create a new style.

Today, Thomson Reuters released EndNote X5 bibliographic management software. Among the new features is a new field in the Journal Article referenced type for NIHMSID. An NIHMSID is a National Institutes of Health Manuscript Submission System reference number. The number indicates that a manuscript has been submitted to PubMed Central in compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy, but that the full text is not yet available. This release is for Windows only at this time. Please check the university libraries download center for the release in the next few days.

Please follow the steps below to enable the ”Find Fulltext” feature in EndNote X4 for retrieving full text articles outside the UMDNJ network:

Download EndNote X4.0.2 from http://www.umdnj.edu/librweb/access/EndNote.html and install it in a computer outside the UMDNJ network.
From the Edit menu of EndNote program, select Preferences.
Go to Find Full Text located in about the center of Preferences list on the left.
In the OpenURL path, enter http://sfx.umdnj.edu/sfxlcl3 . Below that enter the Authentication URL http://libproxy2.umdnj.edu/login?url=http://libraries.umdnj.edu/access/restricted/EndNoteAuthentication.html
From the References menu, select Find Full Text –> Authenticate … This method allows you to try connecting without starting a Find Full Text search. You should be directed to our UL’s login web page. Log in as indicated on the web page. You are now authenticated for this session of EndNote or until our proxy server times out the connection. Then you still need to specifically select the references. Then under the References menu, click Find Full Text –> Find Full Text … command to begin searching for full text articles.
